Apple Seeds First OS X 10.9.2 Build to Developers

Apple today seeded the first test build of OS X 10.9.2 to registered Mac developers, just three days after the publicreleaseof OS X 10.9.1. The build, termed 13C32, is available to registered developers through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store as well as through the Mac Dev Center.

The OS X 10.9.2 beta first distributed to developers this afternoon includes Apple’sFaceTime audio, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) feature that was originally introduced to the iPhone with iOS 7. With FaceTime audio on both iOS and OS X, Apple users will be able to seamlessly call one another from any device.

FaceTime audio is designed to allow users to initiate voice-only calls with other FaceTime users without turning on the accompanying video feed. Currently, Macs running Mavericks only have access to the standard FaceTime app, which bundles both video and audio.

German retailer Conrad Electronic has, however, now begun taking pre-orders for the two stock configurations of the new Mac Pro, citing availability of Monday, December 16.

Apple Seeds Two New Mavericks Updates

Apple has internally seeded two upcoming updates to Mavericks, OS X 10.9.1 and OS X 10.9.2, to its employees, according to a source that spoke to9to5Mac. Reportedly nicknamed “Board,” OS X 10.9.1 will be released later in the month to fix several bugs introduced with OS X 10.9.

Since the release of Mavericks, users have reported several different issues, with the Mail app, mostly related to Gmail accounts. Apple has already seeded an updated Mail app to its employees and AppleSeed members, and it is possible that a Mail fix could be bundled into the next public Mavericks release. Apple is also said to be preparing updates for issues within Safari, iBooks, and Remote Desktop.

OS X 10.9.2, nicknamed “Carve”, is also said to be in testing with Apple’s software engineering teams, adding minor feature enhancements and additional bug fixes after the 10.9.1 update.

Also in testing, the source said, is OS X 10.9.2. That release is codenamed “Carve,” and it’s likely to include more bug fixes, and perhaps minor feature enhancements. Both OS X 10.7.2 and OS X 10.8.2 were updates to Lion and Mountain Lion designed to increase feature-parity between iOS and OS X. OS X Mavericks is currently lacking support for iOS’s iMessage blocking feature and FaceTime Audio, so it seems plausible that OS X 10.9.2 could add those features.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is also continuing work on the next iteration of OS X, 10.10, which has been seeded internally. The next iteration of OS X is said to alter the look of the operating system to bring it in line with iOS 7.

In addition to Mavericks updates, Apple has also been testing iOS 7 updates. As wereported this afternoon, MacRumors has seen increasing numbers of devices running iOS 7.0.4 in web logs since October 22, suggesting that the next minor update to iOS 7 could come in the near future.

On the auction site, the Mac Pro value is listed at $40,000 to $60,000, and like the rest of the custom-designed products, it will be auctioned off on November 23. It is unclear whether the Mac Pro will be available to the buyer at that date, as Apple has announced that it will officially launch the Mac Pro to consumers in December.

The specs of the red Mac Pro are not listed on the auction site, but Apple’s Mac Prosstart at $2,999 and come in several different configurations. The entry-level version includes a 3.7 Ghz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs, 12 GB of memory, and 256 GB of PCIe-based flash storage.

The higher-end 3.5 Ghz 6-core version with 16 GB of memory will starts at $3,999, and additional configure-to-order options offer 8-core or 12-core Xeon E5 processors, AMD FirePro D700 GPUs, up to 64 GB of memory and up to 1 TB of flash storage.

Ive and Newson have also collaborated on a number of other products, including a one-of-a-kind Leica camera, an aluminum desk, and solid gold Apple EarPods. Proceeds from the auction will go to Product (RED), a longtime Apple partner. Apple has raised more than $65 million for the charity since 2006.

Intel Delays Next-Generation Broadwell Chips Until 2014 Due to Manufacturing Issue

Intel yesterday confirmed that it is delaying the production of its next-generation Broadwell processors on account of a manufacturing issue. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced the news during Intel’s earnings call, stating that production on the chips will begin during the first quarter of 2014 (via PCWorld).

Intel’s Broadwell chips are designed to be the successor to its existing Haswell chips, manufactured on a 14-nanometer process as opposed to Haswell’s current 22-nanometer process.
